Blossoms: A newsletter for the family and friends of Rose Blossom Nursery School

January and February 2007

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Rose Blossom School as we start the year 2007. It has been easy to explain winter this year, as we continue to experience an unusually cold winter season here in Santa Cruz. The children are learning how to bundle up in order to enjoy outdoor play time without being too cold. Thank you for sending the warm outer clothing and accessories. We are looking good out there in our colorful hats, scarves, and gloves, and keeping warm, too!

We are learning about the months of the year, the seasons, the days of the week, and a fun topic, dinosaurs. There is an exhibit in San Francisco about dinosaurs, if you can get there (see information below). In February, our study of outer space, shapes, and Valentine’s Day will keep us happily occupied.

I am presenting more writing practice to the children, in addition to their reading and phonics, and counting practice. Assessments are ongoing, and I will be giving parents of children who are graduating from Rose Blossom School written progress reports on the phonics and reading program, and save some examples of math and writing, as well. If you have any questions about your child’s progress at Rose Blossom School, a conference time can be arranged. Thank you!

Thank you for all of your support, assistance, and good wishes

Happy New Year to you all,

— Sharon Rose, Director

At Rose Blossom School we celebrate the children's birthdays with a "walk around the sun" for the number of years of the birthday, and we sing happy birthday. We also help the birthday boy or girl make a special crown, which he/she can wear all day, and especially for our ceremonial ritual.

If the family wants to bring a treat to contribute to the school celebration, we ask that it please not add too much sugar to their diet. Some ideas are sliced fruit, mini quick bread muffins, and even party favors, like small bubble bottles. Thank you!

Calendars needed!

Gather up your extra 2007 calendars and bring them in to Rose Blossom School. We will give one to each child as part of our study of the calendar, months, days of the week, and seasons.

Welcome! To Rose Blossom School

Marcelina, Noelle, Mia and their families.

Registration

Registration for the following year seems to be starting earlier and earlier! We are just really getting going, and it seems too soon, but schools are having open houses, and parents are contemplating what to do for the next school year. Rose Blossom early registration for the summer and next school year will start “in house” at the end of February, with outside registration beginning in March. This way, current students will get first choice for enrollment requests.

FYI - we are currently fully enrolled! Afternoons can be added, but requests for different or added days are being put on a waiting list.!

Tumbling Tutor

Tumbling Tutor classes resume with the usual Monday/ Thursday afternoon schedule on January 8, 2007.

Fun Yoga

Fun Yoga starts another 10-week session on Tuesday, Jan 30th and continues until Tuesday, April 3rd. Sign up sheet is on the counter. $6 per session, or $50 for all 10. Please dress participants in loose clothing for comfortable movement. A small, cozy blanket can be brought to the class for the ending relaxation. Thank you!

Needed!

Sharon’s camcorder has videotape of the Teddy Bear Picnic. Do any of you have expertise in editing video that you could share with us at Rose Blossom so we can make the videos of the shows available to the families?

Celebrate Winter

Juliet’s Celebrate Winter is scheduled for Monday, February 5th and Tuesday, February 6th at 11:00 AM. Sign up sheet will be on the counter. $5.00 for this seasonal class.

Performances:

There is no performance in January. Our next show will be at the end of February, Wed. Feb 21st and Thurs. Feb 22nd, at 10:00 AM. All families and friends of Rose Blossom School are invited.

Valentine’s Day

For Valentine’s Day we invite the children to make valentine cards for all of their friends at school. An updated class list will be distributed to make this easier, and a “mailbox” system will be set up in school at the beginning of February. When the valentine cards are ready, simply bring them in to school, and help your child “mail” the cards in the special valentine folders. On the day of the Valentine party, the children will take their folders home. Thank you!
